A few weeks ago, I texted to my boyfriend about the wintry mix falling during my walk home from the subway station, and called it "oobleck。" He responded with "???" After I read Seuss’s Grinch for the first time recently, I had to reread the best book that Santa ever gave me, Bartholomew and the Oobleck。 I loved the illustrations so much when I was a kid, and still do。 The fine pencil drawings, with meticulous patterns erased into them for texture, are brilliant。 The addition of pea green, only on the blobs of oobleck, point up the unnaturalness of this weird phenomenon。 Seuss’ inspired idea of new weather—a sticky green substance that rained down and glued After I read Seuss’s Grinch for the first time recently, I had to reread the best book that Santa ever gave me, Bartholomew and the Oobleck。 I loved the illustrations so much when I was a kid, and still do。 The fine pencil drawings, with meticulous patterns erased into them for texture, are brilliant。 The addition of pea green, only on the blobs of oobleck, point up the unnaturalness of this weird phenomenon。 Seuss’ inspired idea of new weather—a sticky green substance that rained down and glued everything together—is as delightfully unexpected and gross as ever。 The message that even the powerful are not almighty is still worth considering, as is the concept that a little can become too much too fast if good judgment isn’t used。A great read for kids and parents。 Maybe best for hands-on kids who like making slime and other gooey substances。 。。。more

I didn't really like this book。 I prefer Dr。 Seuss's more abstract books。 I didn't really like this book。 I prefer Dr。 Seuss's more abstract books。 。。。more

This book I enjoyed reading aloud to our family。 With some fun characters, it allowed for some fun voices and quite a range of dramatic moments (with some comedy spice thrown in for good measure。)

At first, and judging by the cover (I know, I know - but sometimes you just do), this story was just a silly tale about green goo。 However, when it came to the part where the king solves the problem, suddenly it became about the Atonement。 I know it is weird to think about, but I tend to see my Savior in a lot of books I read。 As the Oobleck is sticking to people and weighing them down, much like sin does, and there is not anything they can do to help themselves, suddenly the king (in the role o At first, and judging by the cover (I know, I know - but sometimes you just do), this story was just a silly tale about green goo。 However, when it came to the part where the king solves the problem, suddenly it became about the Atonement。 I know it is weird to think about, but I tend to see my Savior in a lot of books I read。 As the Oobleck is sticking to people and weighing them down, much like sin does, and there is not anything they can do to help themselves, suddenly the king (in the role of the Savior for just a moment) utters two simple words (the Atonement) asking for forgiveness and suddenly, people are released from the bondage of sin (the Oobleck)。 Such an unexpected and delightful find in a children's book。 。。。more

This book teaches you to say "I'm sorry" and "It's all my fault。" Cute, but it does have magic and incantations。 This book teaches you to say "I'm sorry" and "It's all my fault。" Cute, but it does have magic and incantations。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I can’t count how many times I checked this book out of our local library when I was little。 The library was (and always has been) one of my favorite spaces。 I can’t wait to leisurely stroll through the aisles again。 When it’s safe。 Whenever that will be again。 (Don’t you wish Trump could say “I’m sorry” and “it’s all my fault” and COVID would disappear? 2020。 What a year。)I love how our county library syncs with Kindle and it was easy to read this ebook on my iPad with the call outs。 That’s one I can’t count how many times I checked this book out of our local library when I was little。 The library was (and always has been) one of my favorite spaces。 I can’t wait to leisurely stroll through the aisles again。 When it’s safe。 Whenever that will be again。 (Don’t you wish Trump could say “I’m sorry” and “it’s all my fault” and COVID would disappear? 2020。 What a year。)I love how our county library syncs with Kindle and it was easy to read this ebook on my iPad with the call outs。 That’s one side effect of quarantine I am grateful for! This is another book about Bartholomew from the 500 hats and the king。 The king is bored with the weather and wants to have something new。 His wise men create Oobleck and chaos ensues! This is a fun book to revisit the characters from 500 Hats。

This is quite long for a readaloud, but we split it into two sessions and thoroughly enjoyed it。 I love the lesson that the resolution teaches! My 11-year-old daughter highly recommends making "oobleck" out of cornstarch and water to go along with this book。 This is quite long for a readaloud, but we split it into two sessions and thoroughly enjoyed it。 I love the lesson that the resolution teaches! I was in an admittedly rough mood while cleaning and found this。 Knowing I hadn’t read it before, I did!Unsurprisingly, it seems the theme of “incompetent ruler who wants to be special and makes a mess of things” has been around for a while。 It felt all too real, especially his refusal (no matter how brief) to apologize。I also loved the art, but then, I always do in Dr。 Seuss books。 However, the grey and green, with nothing else, was really striking。Highlight of the book was definitely how Barth I was in an admittedly rough mood while cleaning and found this。 Knowing I hadn’t read it before, I did!Unsurprisingly, it seems the theme of “incompetent ruler who wants to be special and makes a mess of things” has been around for a while。 It felt all too real, especially his refusal (no matter how brief) to apologize。I also loved the art, but then, I always do in Dr。 Seuss books。 However, the grey and green, with nothing else, was really striking。Highlight of the book was definitely how Bartholomew Cubbins keeps abandoning people stuck in the ooblek because they are of no use to him。 。。。more

Fantastic book to teach the ever so important phrase “I’m sorry。” Making “Oobleck” (cornstarch, water, and green food coloring) is a really good sensory activity。 Also touches on the topics of weather and emotions。

It had been a long time since I read this to my kids when they were little。 This time, I read it to grandkids and we made Ooobleck together over the Thanksgiving holiday。 What a fun mess, and what a good message in the book!
